Listen to the wife!

The watermark may have my name on it but this photo was taken by none other than my wife in South Africa back in 2008. She told me to snap the tree with my SLR but I stupidly ignored her wisdom & continued to look for animals. So she snapped it with the P&S and to date it's one my favorite photos that I never took. Lesson? Listen to the wife!

Two good lessons from a nice image: (1) keep an open mind, and (2) centering the subject can make a nice composition. I've found that going to a place with strong preconceptions of what to photograph will blind me to compositions I had not anticipated. Gradually I am learning to keep an open mind, and my photography is improving as a result.

Thanks for the comments! We do trade nowadays on our journeys between the SLR and whichever nice P&S we have with us (Nikon P7000 or Sigma DP1). Just depends who is seeing what at the moment. Next safari though, I think we'll pack both SLRs
