The math behind dimensions

Is there something that explains dimensions and the size of content block and the effect of different font sizes on the size of a content block. How big is medium text in px. Is there a nice diagram, kind of like a house blue print that shows it all on one page. I want to make sure i use my space wisely, i.e my font size may create white space or not under another content block, kind of like rooms in a house but there is unused floor space because my font was too small and now a wall is 12 inches thick and should only be 6 inches thick. The content blocks are rooms and the walls are ??? When the bottom margin is 12px and the top margin is 6px on the content block below is my total margin 18px or the larger of the two, 12px

No diagram that I know of. As long as your viewers can read your text, don't worry about "white space". Different monitors/devices will look well, different.
