Why color?

In February, 2010, I took this photograph of a vendor at a local
flea market. As usual, I processed it in both black and white and
in color. The black and white version works better, in my opinion.
Earlier this month, I returned to that flea market, and my subject was
still there selling silver items. But, his booth was just a table with
a few items displayed uninterestingly (from a photographic point of
view). He's wearing more stuff than he has for sale. I do wish I
would have caught more of that hand in the lower left. I'm sure
I had a reason for this framing at the time, but I don't remember it.
Black and white doesn't work as well for this shot, which is more of
a character study than a street candid. Too much dark area in one
mass and not enough separation of the darks and lights.
Sometimes I think I dwell too much on decisions like color or b&w,
close-up or wide view, and the proper background.
