If a photo has GPS coordinates embedded and you would like to remove these, you would open an image, click te wrench icon > Edit > Edit Geo Location and clear the latitude and longtitude.

However, when submitting that form with an empty latitude & longtitude, internally the values seem to be stored as "0", because after saving, the image will be placed on the equator off the coast of Africa :)

That's not something I can reproduce on a New SmugMug gallery. Can you include a link to a photo where you're seeing that?

This image had GPS data. Just now, I removed that as described above. Indeed the "globe" icon has disappeared from the lightbox, but have a look at the map on my homepage (because a "gallery-wide" map is not available for some reason): http://qbic.smugmug.com/ (bottom)

Hmm, problem is gone. Either someone did something, or that map gets updated in 2 stages, first reset to "0.0" coordinates and after a few minutes finally removed from the map...

It'll take some time for changes to process. It's similar with keywords and other metadata, where re-indexing needs to take place. That may take up to 24 hours at times.
