Hi,

Lately I found myself in need of doing steady shots a lot using my Canon Powershot S50 small camera. I have a biggish video cam tripod that I can use but that's just the problem it looks kinda odd having a small camera mounted on top of that. Does anyone know of a tripod made especially for small cameras that doesn't look weird or cheap?

Thanks
Rudy

I wouldn't worry too much about the way it looks. Almost all digicams will look silly when mounted on a decent tripod. That said, it also doesn't make much sense to spend three times as much on a tripod and head as the camera is worth. I bought a Giotto VT-809 for around 50 Euros and used it with a Canon A75. Worked fine for that (and looked really weird :D), but I recently upgraded to bigger, heavier equipment and I'm afraid it's not going to cut it for that. So you should also consider your future plans before buying.

    Cheers,

    Rudy,
    Check this out: Sunpack mini-D.
You can get it online or in your local camera store.
I got mine at Best Buy when I still had 828, which, as you may know, had tripod mount well close the mass center.
It worked well with it. Now that I switched to 20D I cannot use this baby anymore, so if you're interested - let me know, we're fairly close:-)
    EDIT:
Took a couple of pics to give you a more clear idea of what I'm talking about:

    Mini-D in "mini" mode:

Same with its 3-sectioned legs fully extended:

why not try a mono pod
I use point and shoot exclusively and find a "mono pod" very handy. I use a hiking pole that has a screw off top and you can mount the camera quickly and easily. When not in use for the camera it works great for kiking. Check out REI, EMS or Sierra Traders. I can send a picture if you'd like.

I have the Sunpak 2003 Pocket Tripod. It is great for point and shoots. It is all metal, has three section legs and what is really nice is that you can expand the legs out, allowing it to lower the camera, almost to the tabletop, for when you don't want any height at all. Recommended

I love mine it is great....... link to ebay store that carries them:

I also moved to Giottos for a tripod....a little lighter than my Manfrotto/Bogen was and a lot more compact in fully closed position..however it is just as tall and legs spread to ground level.

    Good luck .
