My niece - sister's daughter - is preggos. Although she hasn't yet, I know the "ask" is in the pipe and eventually she will want me to do some preggo photos for her.

Any ideas for this?

She's a pretty girl, tiny yet robust. She's into cross-fit. I don't know if I want to do the typical preggo session... the hands in a heart-shape on the belly, etc. I really am not interested at this point in what she wants. She didn't consult me before getting pregnant so I won't ask her what kind of photos she wants. :huh

Right now, I'm thinking of incorporating smoke, flames, maybe a tiger. :scratch

Thanks for the help.

- Alex

You covered the one thing I dislike about the preggers shoots, and engagement sessions in general: the hands in heart.

Get her into a fitness outfit, have her chase a tiger and put out a burning house because those are nothing compared to carrying a baby around.

OK, I bought a pair of way over sized jeans, buckled them at my knees, hung my boxers out, put my hat on backwards, lit up a joint, and am now in homie mode.

OK, ya get a double barreled shotgun, an older fella, dad, pregnant gal, daughter, young man, near do well. Now you git daughter looking all surprised and happy, with the father to be, sweating profusely, and big time stress on his face, on his knee proposing with dad holding the shotgun.

    Homie mode off. :D

Thanks John. In all honesty, I'm really thinking of taking a classic/editorial portraiture approach with this. In the end, the goal is to capture this moment in time for her, that she will be able to keep forever. I don't want to occlude the memory with a bunch of kitschy concepts.

Sam... not a bad idea. It would be pretty funny for sure.

Then go for that. Clean, beautifully lit shots which emphasise her pregnant shape without drifting into boudoir-ish shots. Bandeaus and cloth drapes.

I believe there was a Creative Live seminar which did "classic" and "art inspired" maternity shots; I think it was Sue Bryce plus one of their other "regulars". Might be worth googling around for it (and results from it) thumb.gif

The tiger idea is tempting, but I think you're better off throwing a sasquatch in there for the "wow" factor XD

But in all seriousness, let's see..she likes cross fit. Is she a health nut? I mean.. I don't see a cross-fit themed shoot as something desirable when you're pregnant.

You could always do a "day in the life of" shoot. Document her morning and some daily activities. She could be doing something exercise related, or not. It doesn't matter. But what does matter is that you are documenting the relationship between herself, and her soon to be child. I'm not a fan of maternity shoots, but if you plan it right, you can get some killer shots.

The tiger idea makes me think of doing a spoof on the Katy Perry Roar video. Check it out if you haven't seen it, it's kid friendly.

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.

Forget about the niece, I want to see this pic. rolleyes1.gif

Ok, she's looking into the bathroom mirror, holding a pregnancy test.
In the background/doorway is the guy.

Two shots come to mind, the "I'm so happy" shot or the "What do we do now" shot.

She and her husband are looking into the bathroom mirror, holding the test. The "guy" in the background is her father & mother with that "we're gonna be grandparents" look...

I would do some traditional portraits on a white background. Then some shadow/light portraits.

Here are a couple of simple ideas
I should have cleaned up the panty area however.

In the final product the hands are cropped out.
