In monochrome, I think #2 is works better because of the additional contrast... A Septarian Nodule I think?
I enjoy shots that I can "look into" for a while, and that encourage my eye around the capture. When I take shots like these, I look to frame them in a way that encourages that. I feel you did that here. Nicely done.
If I were to offer any suggestion, I would mention the shadow upper left in #1. Would recommend softening the transition there.
I might (for fun) also suggest a "manual hdr" (that's what I call duplicating a RAW shot a different EV values, then faking out the HDR software to see them as separate shots). Done with some discretion and subtlety, you might get even more gradations of tone there (not that it doesn't look good now).
