Google results during transition...

I am transitioning from my old website to my SmugMug website. Google is still showing results from my old website. For example, if I search for "Best Boulder Photos" I get a first page result of "www.arrowphotos.com/Boulder.htm"

Unfortunately, the .htm isn't recognized by SmugMug and I get the "These aren't the photos you're looking for." page.

Is there any method to prevent this?

Can SmugMug just ignore any extensions? For example, if SmugMug ignored the extension, then the user would be directed to www.arrowphotos.com/Boulder which is a valid url in SmugMug.

Thanks,
Charles

    Hi Charles,

We're sorry to hear that you're having some trouble with Google results. I took a look and noticed that http://arrowphotos.com/Boulder.htm works and still shows your old site. So, I did a terminal dig and it looks like your a record for your domain is not set up correctly. Your A Record '@' should point to 208.79.45.23

Updating that may help speed up the google crawl to see that the page is no longer valid. Or, you can also check into the Google Webmaster tools to get your old content removed/updated: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663660?hl=en or https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/164734?hl=en

I hope this helps. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, we are always happy to help.

    Best Regards,

    Christina,
    Thank you for responding.

    1. I asked my old host to point to 208.79.45.23, but they tried and it wouldn't work. They said:

"When we were trouble shooting the issues with the initial changes we were not getting any response from the SmugMug IP address provided when we tried to ping it. So we instead left your domain without the www (arrowphotos.com) pointed to our servers and forced your website to use the www (www.arrowphotos.com). We then redirected the www to the SmugMug sub-domain that was provided. This allowed the website to redirect to SmugMug and your email to work properly at Sixu. If the only issue is that you can't upload photos to arrowphotos.com, then we suggest you upload your photos directly to the SmugMug IP address or to www.arrowphotos.smugmug.com. Or if there are other issues we are not aware of and you would like us to directly route your domain without the www (arrowphotos.com) then we would be happy to add that A-Record directly to the IP."

Does this make sense to you? Any recommendations on how to proceed? It seems to me there are a number of issues that are yet unresolved but since I am caught in the middle, it is difficult to understand what to do.

    2. If I go into Google Webmaster tools and remove old content, will that have a permanent negative impact on my good search results?

    Thanks,
    Charles

    Charles,

    1. I can't say why they weren't able to set up the A record, but the redirect they put in place works fine as well. There's nothing else you need to do and nothing really to keep in mind when you use your SmugMug site. You can ignore the additional suggestions they included as these do not apply to SmugMug.

    2. No, removing content should only influence the content that you do remove.
