A Look Back at 2013

One of the promises I made to myself at the beginning of 2013 was to improve the way I shot macros. That did not include purchasing myself any new equipment -- I meant to get better on what I already owned (admittedly some pretty good stuff already).
1) I found this guy dying in my garden in April, so while I was able to get several crisp shots without worrying about being stung, his body language rendered some of the shots awkward.
2) We had a plethora of Tiger Mosquitos arrive for the first time this year. I got bit a lot but only managed to capture it two or three times. This lucky lady managed to get through my jeans.
3) Of course, there were ants aplenty.
4)
5) And we had more than our fair share of flies:
6)
7)
8) Even the hoverflies came out to play.
9) It's a bug eat bug world out there.
10) And we're only trying to capture it as best as possible.
I think I got incredibly lucky last year, and hope that lasts into this year and beyond. (And obviously this year one of my resolutions is to learn more about insects, their proper names, etc.)

When using flash. Try ballancing light with higher iso to prevent black backgrounds, allowing some natural background light .
