Carl Zeiss lenses for Nikon-F mount?

Carl Zeiss have gone all mysterious in their placement of a message on their home page, it reads "Millions of SLR Photographers Will Soon Discover a New Dimension in Photography." At the moment we have no idea what this means, speculation on our forums and elsewhere ranges from a new Zeiss digital system (Sony?) to Zeiss lenses for Canon / Nikon mounts (a leaked image shows Nikon F-Mount Zeiss lenses). UPDATE 21/12: As predicted it looks as though this will be Carl Zeiss lenses for Nikon F-Mount, the latest reveal names 'ZF'.
I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

Pardon my naivete, but is the Zeiss entry into Nikon mount lenses really going to make a difference for most users? Having another high priced lens option is not going to drive the prices of the high end Nikkors down. Am I really going to be able to tell the difference between a high end prime Nikkor and a Zeiss on my D2X?
I do use all Zeiss optics in my offices and in the operating room for my microsurgery of the ear. I know they are a quallity company. I'm just wondering what I'm really supposed to expect other than a high price for a quality lens.

Point well taken. All I know is what I've read, and there is some people excited about Zeiss f-mount lenses. As for the competition part, I would agree, but my die-hard Nikon shooter friend seems to think the Nikon corporate mindset needs it.
We'll see, right? In any regard, it can only be for the better.

Here's what I want from Zeiss:
I would be willing to plunk down a pretty penny or two for a DX specific, 14mm f/4 lens that, unlike the current 35mm offerings in the 15mm aspherical department, would accept 77mm front filters. I would want this for landscape applications where I'm interested in milking absolutely every bit of printability out of my lens and sensor, so I can go to 24x36" and have as much detail as an 8x12", when the 20 or so megapixel DX cameras roll around.
However, I dunno if Zeiss' plan is to make DX specific lenses, and I don't know if 20 megapixels in an APS size sensor is a good thing. But for my style I shoot at f/8 - f/16 100% of the time anyway for super-wide, so "the Zeiss advantage" might be even less in my case. Not to mention the fact that I like the affordability / portability of the DX format, so I'm not sure if Zeiss can do better than the already near-perfect 12-24 lenses from Nikon and Tokina, at f/8 - f/16 that is.
Other than that, I don't think Zeiss optics hold any advantage over other brand name or even third party lenses. Mosly because I like to have AF in all my normal / tele lenses. Super-wide angle is the only genre in which I see Zeiss optics in the Nikon F-mount suceeding. Which is oh-so-ironic since Canon shooters are the ones fiddling with convertors to get Zeiss lenses to work, and the Nikon shooters are for the most part happy with Nikon lenses... I would think Zeiss would see a much bigger opportunity in the Canon FF DSLR market. But maybe they know something we don't about the (effectively) non-existent Nikon FF DSLR market!
All in all though, I wouldn't be able to afford a 14mm Zeiss nor an FF camera for a decade or so, so It's no big deal for me right now. But definitely an interesting story to follow!
On photography forums there is an endless amount of discussion between who has the sharpest copy, be it an L series or Zeiss. Even in the Zeiss, a catagory of ultra high (compared to the L series) lenses people still measurebate. I'm sure this will drive some people to switch.

Looks as if we... A) need to be able to read German, and have to wait until 21 December to find out.
I have my bets that they'll come out with a 400 f/1.2 Canon mount lens that weighs under a pound and costs less than $1,000 US.

Hmmmm, and I can't even afford Nikon glass!

While they may be expensive, they'll be awesome and add more competition to Nikkor. My Nikon friends are psyched.

Nikon glass doesn't leave much room for Zeiss to improve upon.
Zeiss must be going the EGO route that Leica does pretty well with.

Nicholas,
Interesting thought. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
