Ambient Recreation

Once a week I meet with a student to help him better understand photography and lighting techniques. (This is also a great way to challenge myself) Lately we have been going over when to and when "not" to use artificial lighting such as strobes or flashes. Yesterdays challenge was to tripod mount a camera then photograph an egg using only the ambient lighting. Then lights out! Now it was time to recreate the same lighting using only strobes or flashes. This turned out to be a great exercise that really put our minds to work.
Check out the result>
Image #1 is the egg shot with ambient lighting only.
Image #2 is the egg shot with artificial lighting only.

*after posting this I realized that I should have added this thread to "Photo Craft" my bad ;-)

Interesting exercise. Viewed individually (without comparison to each other) I would have struggled to say if it was ambient or not. Comparing them though I think I could have picked which was which.

One of these days I'll have to figure out what my "style" is..
