scope of social buttons

If I place the social buttons (FB, G+ and twitter) in the header or footer of the site wide customization area does that mean that when a user hits like, regardless of what page they are looking at, the like target is the home page?

In other words, if I want to like a gallery, do I need to put the social buttons on the gallery page itself or will the like button in my header tell FB which gallery I'm in? And provide those images as thumbnails?

As far as I know the social buttons simply take the viewer to the specified page on the other site.

You can test this easily - just place the buttons on your page and click them.

I haven't unveiled yet and the buttons don't seem to work at all on the new pages. Just checked again, and the twitter button works, but the FB button doesn't. And the twitter button did post a link that took me to the folder I clicked it from rather than the home page. So I'll cross my fingers that the others will work properly once I unveil.
