Client gallery not working

I have a photo shoot today and just unveiled my new site yesterday, only to discover that my private client gallery doesn't seem to work. I found this thread: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=237816&highlight=private+client+galleries, but I'm a little unclear.

What I'd like to do it upload the client photos to her gallery (password protected) inside my "Clients" Page, and have her select which photos she wants from her gallery. When I created the gallery, I logged out and retried the gallery link, but I get a Page Not Found. I also can't seem to create a folder or gallery within the Client Page, so maybe I'm doing it backwards? I'm so confused.

Am I just overlooking something? What's the best way to handle this?

Make sure the gallery is set to unlisted and not private. Only you see a "private" gallery when logged in.

I have it set to unlisted with a password, but not private. I don't see it except for when I'm logged in. Someone in the thread (link I posted earlier) said they made theirs a Page rather than a Gallery, so that's what I tried. But I don't see it.
This is one person's method on their site: http://alexsotelophotography.smugmug.com/ (Clients appears as a link in the navigation).

Ok, I tried it on another computer (again, not logged in to SM). I do see it by using the link: http://www.alicethompsonphotography.com/Clients/n-G5HSX However, I don't see a way to add a folder within it for the specific client. Is it because the "Client" is a Page and not a Gallery?

Here's what I tried today, but I still need some help as I don't think it's working correctly:

I created a new Folder called "Client Photos." http://www.alicethompsonphotography.com/organize/Client-Photos
I marked it Unlisted. Inside that folder, I've included a Gallery for the client called "GS." I've made that one Unlisted and Password Protected.
    http://www.alicethompsonphotography.com/organize/Client-Photos/GS

Here's the problem: when I log out and use the Client Photos link, I get the box that pops up asking me to log in to my SmugMug username and password (as I do normally when I log in to the admin stuff). Why is it asking for that instead of the password I set for the client?

    What am I doing wrong?

I want to be able to upload my client's photos to a private password-protected gallery where she can view and select her photos. Is that do-able?

I'd greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

It sounds like the gallery is marked as private. Make sure it is unlisted and password-protected, not private. (I know, you said it is unlisted and password-protected but the only reason it should ask you to log in to smug is if it is a private gallery).

I thought that might be it too, but I checked both. The "Client Photos" folder is unlisted and not password-protected and the client's gallery is unlisted + password. Did I set that up incorrectly?

Ah, I think I know what part of the problem is. If it is unlisted you need to use those funky characters at the end of the URL. Attempting to access the gallery without the funky characters (when you are not logged in to your site) should take you to your "page not found" page, not the login screen.

The behavior you are seeing doesn't sound right, but the URLs you are using will not work for unlisted galleries.
Only public galleries can be accessed without those characters.

From the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1229910-new-smugmug-what-are-the-gallery-level-privacy-settings-:
Unlisted galleries aren't visible on your SmugMug homepage and aren't included in search engines. You can give your friends a direct link to find your gallery, like:

    http://cmac.smugmug.com/SmugMug/Fanatical-customers/152400_HYYCN

The code at the end of that link is required for visitors to be able to open your unlisted gallery. Without it, we'll just redirect them to the closest public location: subcategory, category, or your homepage.

Ah ha! The funky characters! I didn't notice those weren't there. I think what happened was I copied the URL from the top of the browser window while I was still inside the Organize area. Once I clicked done, it gave me the link with the funky characters.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, the root Client Photos folder (plus the funky characters) can have a password, in addition to a client-specific password for the client's specific gallery, right?

Thanks Denise! I appreciate all your help!

I haven't experimented with passwords on folders and different passwords on galleries. As far as I know that will work - but given that it is an unlisted folder that contains unlisted galleries I don't believe you need a password on the folder. No one else will see that folder unless you give out the link, and unless that person is logged on to your site opening a folder that contains unlisted galleries will show them an empty folder.

I've poked around a little, and it looks like I can password-protect the main Client Photos folder, but once someone logs in, they don't see anything on that page (since each gallery is unlisted + password-protected), so I guess it won't really matter one way or the other. I don't particularly want other clients to see a list of other client's galleries (even if they can't get into them), so I may leave the Client Photos protected just to avoid that. I'll just have to remember to give the clients their specific link and password to their specific folder. I think that'll work.

    Thanks again, Denise!
