Thanks, Steve. Speaking of butt shots, I'm surprised I didn't get more comments back from this thread: No iffs, ands, ors, or....
I really liked that one.
Nice capture Kdog. It looks a bit overexposed on my monitor and a touch soft.
Thanks, Steve. I had to blow out the snow to get good exposure on the deer. I had originally shot it with something like EC 1.66, but I believe I backed it off some when I converted from RAW. The deer isn't blown out at all, and that was my goal. Does it look blown out to you?
Soft you say? That's about the best I ever get out of my 100-400 at 400mm. f8.0, 1/400s, handheld with IS. Gentle smart sharpening. I'm still a novice at this. Maybe it needed more sharpening? I really can't get this thing to focus any better than that.

Hi Joel. First of all, overall its a very good image, my comments were really just nitpicks.
No the highlights on the deer don't look blown out, just a little bright to me. (This may be just my monitor though)
As far as the sharpness- Whenever I look at a wild life shot I like to see the eyes as the sharpest part of the image. In this shot it looks like the rear end is the sharpest. (Which may be totally appropriate since that is really the most important part of this image). I wonder if it would have been better to have the focus centered on the eye though??
I also have the 100-400 and know how much of a challenge it can be to get sharp images with it. But it can be done. Actually I think that the rump of the deer is pretty sharp. Check out this thread http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=21960 from a while back.
Thank you, sir. Yes, this picture is very bright. Can a picture be too bright as long as it's not blown out? The colors seem good. And he was in the sun and all. I guess it's better than being too dark.
For some reason, I rarely get deer eyes particularly sharp. It's driving me nuts too. I'm not too sure focusing on the eyes would have helped this shot because my DOF should have been several feet deep at minimum. My hand-holding technique is probably holding me back. A tripod would probably work better for me. It's on my list.
Hey, I remember your 100-400 "sharp" post! In fact, you'll notice that I had responded to it, with, yes folks, another shot of a buck. :uhoh
Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement. I'll definitely be sticking around. I like this place.
BTW, here's a 100% crop of his head (once he pulled it out of his butt :giggle).
These eyes actually don't seem that bad to me, so maybe I take back what I said previously.
Comments
Being the mature individual I am I will not make any crude or juvenille comments about the pose. Although I'm dying to.....
