Bad PR by SmugMug!
As of an hour ago, my site also has started to display the unwanted footer - frustrating.
Perhaps SmugMug will take notice if enough of us complain.
They are meant to be providing a service for which we all pay.
Personally, I only hide it on my homepage, where I want the background photo to be displayed with no distractions apart from my navigation. It's visible in my gallery pages.
We have paid for Pro where we get 'complete control' over our site's design.
There should be a way for us to change it to a more fitting text if we want to (or completely remove it as pro users). I changed it simply to remove the 'powered by' part.
We want our site to be quite minimalistic, and we don't want Smugmug's advertising to be the biggest, most prominent part of our footer. We respect that Smugmug should be able to have some way of identifying our sites (or maybe just the lower priced plans imo) as their own to gain more customers but we should be able to have it more customisable.
Perhaps similar to the way we can edit the gallery layouts?
Or perhaps they could instead work on bugs.

Yes, I asked for an explanation of this weird policy in another thread. It's as if my bank, by virtue of owning my mortgage, forced me to have a sign on my lawn advertising that my house was owned by them. I can see forcing this policy on free users. But to force it on pro users, who pay a fee to have control over their design, is nonsensical.
Perhaps SM should change their home page, where they proclaim: " We give you complete control over your site design, so you can be you." This is false advertising.
I also find it strange that they are able to assign programmer hours to "fixing" the sites that hid their branding, while leaving other projects undone.

I first thought of that straight away but for my site it didn't work. I've managed it now but I'll not post it here because it's obvious that Smugmug mustn't want people removing it completely which I can understand is probably frustrating sometimes.

I found a few CSS options for hiding it enough but couldn't get rid of the ever-present vertical scrollbar, which was my main goal (I have always had a subtle powered by smugmug link in my header). I also posted the following "workaround" in the support thread about this...
.sm-page-powered-by A:first-child:before
{
color: #ff0000;
content:"I pay smugmug $300/yr and can't remove this advertisement or the scrollbar it causes -->"
}

Please check out my gallery of customisations for the New SmugMug, more to come!
