Necessary to reset photo ranking when replaced?

Could it be necessary to reset all comments and faves for a photo just because we have replaced it? I often make small improvements on my photos in Aperture, and they are automatically synced to SmugMug. But if the photo has any comments or faves, everything is deleted and the ranking is completely reset. That is very frustrating.
On Flickr we can replace a photo anytime without making a big deal of it. If the visitors want, they can see the date it was replaced in the EXIF data.
