I am currently using JFriend's Slideshow on my home page. I was recently at an event where Smugmug staff attended and while there they tried to encourage me to get changed over to the new Smugmug. After looking at my site they assured me they could do everything in the new smug that I was doing... but after 30 minutes of customization they told me there was no way to match the slideshow.
With my current site, I have the options set to make the picture the proportion of the screen and the largest size possible. This works well for the images I display because most of them are centered. I get many comments on the images on my home page and I believe this "large" display of images gets me work.

I really want to move over to the new smugmug platform. Anyone have any work arounds that will give me the same look and function?

I think my homepage has close to the look you are after but it's a single photo as opposed to a slideshow.
I just did some playing with the slideshow content block on a page. It's close but it doesn't extend as far to the edges as your current slideshow. I find it interesting that a single photo block can extend closer to the edges of the browser window than a slideshow can.
Here's a link to the page where I was playing - http://www.denisegoldberg.com/TestSlideshow/n-brMrP.
Even with a homepage slideshow not as wide as your current slideshow I would recommend moving to new SmugMug. Your galleries pages are not doing a good job of highlighting your work with the small thumbs of legacy smug.

So thinking height is adjusted and not sides.
