This was shot with Strobes, there was one in each corner of the Gym.
You can see in other shots on my page how the strobes did a good job of laying down a blanket of light with minimal shadows. www.actionshots4u.smugmug.com
Joe,
I looked at your Vball shots in your gallery and for the most part I agree that the strobes layed down some nice light I also agree with Daniel that the shot you posted along with another in your gallery right by the net (the 6th image) are a bit on the crispy side :uhoh In these shots the strobe actually detracts from the image instead of adding to it Maybe it's their placement. No way to get them higher up and less angled?
Anyhow, good work and FWIW, V-ball is the hardest subject I've ever shot and I don't shoot as much of it as I'd like anymore :-( So I commend you and agree that you did well on these shots
Quick image of College Volleyball. Lots more on my smugmug page.
Who all here shoots Volleyball ?
I also take pictures of high school volleyball teams. I love it. I have really just started and am finding volleyball to be a very difficult sport to shoot. I also take pictures for basketball and hockey. Joel, I am very envious of the strobes (ah yes another purchase, my wife hates you already!!!) your able to use for your college volleyball. I'm usually taking pictures at several different courts.
Volleyball is difficult in that the lighting is usually poor. I have yet to decide which lens and where to best stand to get the pictures I need.
Here is a picture of my daughter (hope I do this correctly!!!!):
I've so much to learn. Which lens, iso, sutter speed, aperature, dof, etc. I like standing at the side of the net and I'm able to get shots of the setters and diggers with the 85. It seems rather slow to AF though. Then I use the 70-200 and stand at the back facing my team. Taking pictures into the net (from ground level) requires me to pre focus as the net messes with the autofocus.
I have the following equipment:
1DMKII
580 Flash
50 1.4
85 1.2
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
Just bought the Stroboframe Pro-T flash bracket.
Happy New Year all.....
