How to create categories?

Hello,

I am trying to move from my legacy site to the new one. Here's my website: http://www.dawidbilskiphotography.com
I really like the new look of my site but I'd like to make one change. Right now legacy version has all my galleries mixed together but I'd like have this more organize so for example when I click galleries in my navbar I'd like to have different categories separately like: Weddings, engagements, families, places etc

Thanks,
Dawid

In the new system you aren't limited to categories and sub-categories anymore. You just create a folder. Much like the folders on your computer. So you create the folder then also like on your computer you can drag the galleries into the folders to set up the organization how you want it.

How to navigate to a page (?) that shows the folders
I too am trying to migrate to the new SmugMug- I have a link in my site that sends the viewer to a listing of the categories. Now that is a bunch of Folders which I have 'organized' to my satisfaction. Is there a URL that gets me to that view so I can customize the button? /Folders doesn't do it!

Thanks for your help, or please point me to a tutorial that will help me with my newbie questions.

If they are top level try /browse (lower case as are all system pages like /keyword, /search, /date and /popular)

The /browse page an be customized.

BTW, /browse will show all top level public folders, I use a folder box and "choose" what goes in it.

So how, then, does SmugMug determine the user galleries to be presented to visitors to the SmugMug site under the categories in the "browse" area?

The "browse" page by default shows top level content. Usually initially set to "current location". You can
customize the page and add/remove content and change the settings of the folder box. I set mine to
"items | choose" and selected only the ones I want to show not all.

    Allen,
I managed to destroy the 'browse' page but in cleaning up learned how to make a new page which has selected folders as content. The page is located in a folder that is on the same level as the folders that contain the galleries. I get to the page via a nav bar button. I would like the nav bar button to be hierarchical (drop down?), but of course the page is placed in a folder and can't see the folders and galleries contained in the other top level folders. Have you got any hints as to how to organize the hierarchy?

Looks like /browse still works. It shows your top level folders. I see seven top level folders.
Six of the folders have sub-folders and Other has galleries.

If you go to /Other (folder) and add a folder box in it you'll see your new folder named "Folders"
    containing five sub-folders.
    /Other/Folders

This is the best I can tell what your tree looks like.
    People
        2 galleries
    Landscapes
        1 gallery
    Events
        6 galleries
    Travel
        9 galleries
    Still Life
        3 galleries
    Clients
        ? galleries
    Other
        Portfolio (gallery)
        Latest Photos (gallery)
        My Mug (gallery) (make unlisted?)
        AboutMe (gallery) (make unlisted?)
        Slideshow (gallery) (make unlisted?)
        PaulTrefry (gallery)
        Folders (folder)
            Events (gallery)
            Landscapes (gallery)
            People (gallery)
            Still Life (gallery)
            Travel (gallery)

BTW, you have two about galleries.
/Other/About-Me (menu link) << probably keeper
/Other/AboutMe-1 (link from /Other folder) << probably delete

On all my folder pages I added "Pages", "folders" and "galleries" boxes. If any of those have content
the box will show. Any box that is empty will not show.
Or add a "pages, folders and galleries" box and all will show in one box.

    Allen,
You got the hierarchy right except the Other/Folder is a 'page'. Or is that the intended final arrangement?
You said " If you go to /Other (folder) and add a folder box in it you'll see your new folder named "Folders"
    containing five sub-folders.".
By that did you mean create a new folder and just drag the other folders along with their associated galleries into it? Or did you mean convert the 'Folder' page into a real folder?
Thanks for your patience in explaining this stuff,

In your "Other" folder (legacy category) you have both galleries and a folder. To see them all.
On the /Other page add a "folders" box from the content flyout. Set it to "current location". In the
two boxes you'll see galleries in one and folders in the new box.

    OR
You could replace the current galleries box with a "pages, folders and galleries" box set to "current location".
The galleries and folder will then be in one box.
