I've opened the website on 3 differernt browzers and confirmed that the thumbsnail strip and the slideshow align independently of each other....
I hate to constantly hound everyone for help but I hope this doesn't involve any legacy-type customizations to achieve....
thanks in advance..

Please check out my gallery of customisations for the New SmugMug, more to come!
I'd recommend you take a look at your site on a tablet. I'm using a Microsoft Surface right now, and your navbar and banner combination takes up almost half of the vertical space in a maximized (horizontal orientation) browser window.
You can use http://quirktools.com/screenfly to get a sense for different devices.
Also - remove the FYI page (unlist it and remove it from your menu) until it has some content. Right now it looks very unprofessional; I know that's not what you are after.
