In keeping with my monochrome theme I started in an earlier thread, I found this file from December of 2005, shot with a 5D, and reedited it in black and white in LR4 and Silver FX.

I think the main subject, its reflection + conversion work well - but, for me, the presence of the other bird is both a bonus and a problem - with the latter aspect unfortunately weighing more heavily than the former. :(
Sorry, but I can't get past the 2 dark blobs coupling the 2 birds and as such, any further comment re other observations is irrelevant.

Paul, I see the dark blobs you are referring too.

I reedited the image to decrease the intensity of the two shadows along the egret back. Is this more to your liking.

I like the out of focus GBH in the background, and the fact that one has to look at the image for a few seconds to see it, but I agree, the dark reflection, against the white egret, was a bit too much, perhaps. Maybe this image will be more to your liking?

Jim ... fwiw, to me, that's now far less of an 'eye pull' :)

I did wonder if cropping - to halve (say, for ease of description) the distance behind the egret to LHS and the distance above the bg bird's head to top of frame ... would be worth considering? (I've only moved the pic around within the browser window to get some idea, btw)

Doing the latter makes me think the egret and its reflection aren't quite aligned ... using its chest as a datum /reference.

I'd also be tempted to see what it looked like with the 'ufo nav lights' cloned out ... the 3 white blobs just above the egret's head ...

Doesn't matter, btw if it's to 'my liking' - if it not to yours ... I can only make comments about other's pics using the same mindset / parameters I use for my own, which are obviously inexpert and very subjective :)

I was so enraptured by the perfection of the egret itself, I never noticed all the other stuff. I could never make it as an art critic. The second version is definitely better, IMO. bowdown.gif
