I do most of my site viewing on an iPad, and use the swipe method when in lightbox. It works fine for me without any additional code.

You are correct, my mistake. Is there any way to do a smooth transition, much like in Photos on the iPad, instead of a flash transition

Nothing that I've seen. And something like that would require pre-caching alot of images in your gallery to make it viable. To try and anticipate where your visitors will go in your gallery.

I understand the caching issue. When you go and display a gallery are not the full resolution pictures loaded. Yes if you scroll down there may be pictures still being uploaded. Assume all are already loaded when you go to the lightbox and swipe are they not already in memory, especially on an iPad. You can only go L or R so if you pre-cached 6ish photos would that help
