Adding blank photo to adjust sizes

On my home page I want single photos that link to specific galleries, BUT I want these single photos to be a smaller size than default. For example if I want three photos side by side they are each given 33% of the width. I want them to each have 20% of the width and be next to each other. My solution was to upload a photo that is simply a color square the same color as my background. By inserting this photo on the left and the right sides I in essence have 5 photos across but only three will show because the other two blend into the background. This looks great when I am in edit mode, but if I log out the "blank" photos show up as missing images with the little boxes with xs in them (or the quivalent depending on which browser). Any idea why as they are actual uploaded images

Have you considered just adjusting the width of the container that holds these thumbs?

Click the dimensions icon on the box (the one that looks like a triangle).

The problem with that is I don't seem to be able to define space between the photos. I did try playing around with all of the margins ,etc. Even so, I am still curious as to why an actual image would show as missing. If I am really into abstract and all of my images are solid color photos, it would be a mess with all of these default missing image symbols

are those images in private or password-protected galleries? They can't be used on a public page if that's that case.

That was exactly the problem. Thanks
