Blood moon

I stayed up last night to shoot the eclipse. It was difficult! I need guidance on how to do this properly. The pic is at high ISO and therefore noisy and soft, if I used a lower ISO I got motion blur due to the low speed I needed to use. I had OK results of the non-eclipsed moon at ISO 100, f8 and 1/200, but once the eclipse was complete it was another story. Anyway, here it is:

I don't know if it helps any, but I shot this same night with a 300mm zoom. I used 1.6 sec , f/ 5.6, ISO 1600. I did get just a touch of grain in the black areas, but the moon stayed fairly crisp. I used a custom scene mode, which was sharpened just a bit. I like to add that for a little extra pop.

1.6 sec seems pretty long for a moving subject.

Personally I wouldn't go near that

I agree it sounds long, but worth exploring anyway.

Aren't we both moving, the moon around us, us around the sun and both around our respective axes?

Yes, and if you include rotation and motion of our galaxy and the expansion of our universe, it gets even more complicated . But the only one that matters is the rotation of the earth on its axis, which is what creates the apparent rising and setting of the sun, moon and stars.

This is nicely exposed and has fine color. I like the presence of the two stars. It looks like you may have some color noise in the black sky though. Should be pretty easy to fix.

thanks for your galactic comment, I will try to play with this shot again and see if I can come up with a better result.

Alas, no - I was in coastal, Central California and it was socked-in.
