Police K-9 Competition

Action and sport I guess....

Every spring there is a Police Dog competition in AZ. Police, Military, Corrections, and private security officers and their dogs work two days on a course with challenges. Amazing to watch the dogs work, and really makes you not want to be the bad guy. Can't imagine that dog getting hold of you without the 'Michelin Man' suit on. This guy is a character. Plays the bad guy every year and his mouth never stops taunting, teasing his police buddies, and crying like a baby when the dog gets him. Fun time and serious competition for these guys and partners.

One of the top finishers in this competition was taking down a bad guy last night and got stabbed before police pinned him down. Dog is doing ok after surgery. This competition was a lot of fun to watch, but that story brings home how real and how dangerous their job is. Dog probably saved an officer's life last night.

Man those are some nice shots for sure. I love covering SWAT and K9 events because there's always some kind of action or scenario playing out.

One time I did get a little too close and one of the dogs came after me, I have never been so still in my life..lol

Thanks. Yes, I would definitely freeze up if they came at me. This was on a baseball field (winter home of the SF Giants) so all photogs and others were either in dugouts or behind the walls. Many of the dogs (and officers) are beginners and this competition is great training for them to avoid distractions. As audience you try not to laugh when dog re-engages the last 'bad guy' just for good measure, but all around fun day.

Nice shots...looks like the dog is having a wonderful time, but not the poor guy in the orange suit....I like 3 and 4 the best.

I trained dogs for a few years. There was one I'll always remember. His nickname was "Sissy"...

On his first night in the field, he tracked a suspect into an ally and abruptly stopped. He started to growl something like his handler had never heard before-he kept on telling the dog to track but he wouldn't move. Turns out he was standing on top of his suspect and by the time his handler realized it, he'd taken a bite out of the suspect.

Laugh all you want, it happensrolleyes1.gif

    Nice pictures here too!
