Hi all - I haven't picked my camera up in quite a while, but was forced out of retirement by the wife to take some senior pics for our oldest. Here are a handful of my favorites.. and as usual, i have about 5 I like out of 100 taken. Could use some critique- what works, what doesn't.. poses (i had the biggest problem with that part.. as i'm not very talkative when i shoot i guess). Since I have 3 more daughters that aren't far behind, feel i better get better at portraits (not my strong suit). All shot with my D300 and Tammy 2.8 28-75

First off, you have a very pretty daughter. You're lucky to have a willing subject/victim.

    On to the critique.

    1. I don't care for this crop. Normally I like off centered crops, but the right side of this with the top of the railing do nothing for this photo and don't really lead me into the subject. Also, she is a bit underexposed. You need more fill here with either a reflector or a flash.

    2. Awkward crop the way you cut off your feet. Her shoulders are too square to the camera. I'm not a fan of the hand on hip pose, but I gather from my own daughter that this is the latest rage.

    3. I love the open shade lighting here. Her eyes are beautiful and sharp. The expression here is very natural and relaxed. Again, I don't care for the crop. This one should have been much wider or much tighter.

    4. Again, she is under exposed. Either use some fill or spot meter on her face and blow out the background. The crop is awkward across her hands and wrists. She is competing with the fountain which is not really necessary.

    5. I think this is your best shot. I just don't care for what you did with the processing. She looks too pale and the colors seem off. Work on this one some more and you may have a winner.

    6. She looks like she's having fun.

Thanks for the input Mitchell - much appreciated. I think on some of the crops i was forced to go with which side i could as there were quite a few people out doing the same thing i was doing. On the underexposed ones, for number 2 i used on board flash cut down to 1/4 power but i couldn't seem to get the right amount of fill on the others (so ended up with just shooting natural light). I'll go have another look at 5 and see about toning it down a bit in post. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
