I wasn't going to post this here, but it ties in with a thread in "Cameras"
about a suggested lens for a lady that will be shooting her kid's soccer
games.
This was shot with a Tamron 18-270mm on a Nikon D300. The shot was
at ISO 200, f=5.3, at 1/2000. Focal distance was 65mm. I know the
background is too sharp, but I'm still OK with the shot.
It's cropped to a 2:3 because the girl's mother wanted me to mail her
the image so she can print it. For "show", I might crop it to remove the
background rider, but I do like some empty space in the direction of movement.

I don't know what you mean. What is a "-1 stop"? (I mean
I know what a "stop" is, but I don't know what "do a -1 stop
means.)
I shoot RAW, and usually set the camera to underexpose a bit
if I'm shooting in full sun.
These shot were all late morning and mid-day shots in very
bright Florida sun, and that dirt color looks blown-out if I
don't underexpose.
I've been using CS6 in post, but recently starting doing the post
all in Lightroom5. I'm still learning about post in LR, and have
found that it often works better to crop before I make any
adjustments. In CS6, I cropped last.
I didn't reply to the crop suggestion, but I prefer the wider
view. I like my subjects to have room to move. I might
crop the far left, but not as tightly as the suggested crop.

Pipster said he brought the exposure down a full stop and it added a lot of detail but if your shooting RAW then you have lots of room for adjustments.
Very good idea to underexpose in the sun, you know the price you pay if you blow the highlights out
