What a depressing collection. Great photography, but I think I'll stick to the Dgrin Shot of the Year gallery.

    Cheers,

Yes, it is. A pretty depressing year, actually. A lot of heartbreaking tragedies.

That is an amazing set of pictures...makes the peace contest seem appropriate in these violent times.

The top pics of the year aren't exclusively the top pics.

Editors select top events, then find piccies to illustrate them.

Same deal with the Yahoo pics of the year in the link at the top right of the Yahoo news page.
    Sid.

Makes you wonder how many amazing shots didn't make the cut because they weren't about big stories.

A few did, like the soccer ball in the mush. But they have to be spectacular to rise above the news chatter, I guess.

Time magazine's top 20 was equally depressing.

Some really outstanding photos there. The second one, with the man carrying the little girl to safety, is to me the best. It doesn't require any caption to convey a sense of what's happening, and I think that's what the greatest photos have in common. Amazing shot.

I agree about the tongue shot. It isn't on the same level as most of the rest.
