No flash on these just the angle of the light at that time of day. I actually have a white fence but I have cammo tarps over it.

A fellow local w/life 'tog has just replaced his Sigma for a 100 - 400 (using a 70D) after borrowing my 100 - 400 for a couple of months.
His comment was that he generally tended to back off from 500 to 400mm on the Sigma for IQ reasons - and immediately noticed an IQ improvement with the Canon lens.
Using 400 on a 1.6 crop gives him a very similar frame filling image as me using a 500 in a 1.3 crop (640 v 650) ... albeit with double the pixel count in his favour
btw - my 500,(a mk1) bought used was *significantly* less than the figure you mention... and I suspect, as such, I'd not lose much if selling same ... and taking into account the No of frames it's been used for, I've got little to complain about.
I fully accept that using a big lens is more of a hassle / production etc than being able to walk around with something like a a Sigma or 100 - 400, but everyone's usage style and requirements varies
Just relating a situation and a pov, no more, no less.

It seems for 800 bucks, at worst case it would eat dust but for canon's 500 f4L - II, the lowest price even in used market is 10,500.
With my spending habits, that's a huge ask....but in long run I do want it.
Cheers!
