I think I'm having the same questions with some of my family members. I'm willing to gift them an account "if they will use it" and really want it. If they won't use it, I don't want to waste the referral $ on them.

So, you have two options. 1) You can decide to just gift it to them anyway and the person receiving the gift can think of it like a 365-day free trial (though it will cost you the referral $ no matter what) because they have a year to decide if they want to renew or not.

or 2) They can try out smugmug on a normal 7-day free trial. Cancel after day 6 and then tell you whether they want a free account or not.
