Here, in Chicago, we have a cosplay (costumed reenactment folk) event called ACEN.

I had multiple shoots during the weekend this year (30-45 minute slots). Here is one of them.

This was a family from OH. :)

I like your lighting. I know you don't have complete control over the environment but the water fountain is a major distraction. The subjects are in character but the background doesn't help. The characters they portray are very dark and this screams shot in the mall. I think shooting tighter with the darker backgrounds and underexposing those by 2 stops, plus using to off camera flash to then make them pop would be in line with the characters. Looks like it could have been done by just moving away from the fountain.

I love the fountain - it feels cinematic, and the lighting is dark/harsh enough that it works for me (bright sun definitely would NOT have done it).

My only nit there would have been to have framead it with more negative space to the left.

    Serious cosplay costuming - wow!

    thank you ever one.

bilsen, those are my favorite as well. :)
John, thank you for your feedback. If I was to move anywhere else, you'd be seeing a large number of people walking around. This was shot at a convention center entrance. To me, fountain looks as a good backdrop. And, if we're looking at the appropriate portrayal of the characters, these would be more fitting than what you are suggesting as both - Joker and Harley are Chaotic Evil characters ;) (yes, i'm a geek like that). I will make sure to give your suggestions a shot next time I shoot there, though. Another big con will be taking place in a couple of months, and i'm already getting booking requests.

Diva, thank you much :) I liked how fountain worked with the characters I shot that day.

I can see that, I was thinking more in lines of comic book covers and video game portrayals where the backgrounds are not so clean or domestic looking. Naturally any suggestions from others is more how they would shoot, I would just go darker on the backgrounds so they are hints of color if they can't be controlled.

I want to do what you are describing. I know exactly what you are referring to, and we even have a perfect building in my state to pull that one off. Problem is - the university doesn't like people photograph there, unless they're students. :(

Eventually, my goal is to do a collection of villains with a Gothic backdrop, and underexposed lines, high contrast low whites and dropped blacks.

I am currently waiting to hear from a demolition manager who is going to be tearing down an old theater.. boy, am I hoping to get some joker / Harley time in that slot! :D
