Mini-Challenge #188 - Connections
I would like to thank Phil for giving me this opportunity by selecting my ski race photo as the winner of his challenge. FACT is something I also learned a while back from those haunt the Sports forum here on Dgrin.

This next challenge is going to be all about connections. What's a connection? Well, I'll leave that up to you but it could be:
  • A literal physical connection between objects in the photo
  • An emotional connection between the subject and the viewer
  • A connection between two or more subjects in the photo
Judging will be capricious and arbitrary :D to some extent as we will all find different meanings in the connections shown. I get to pick the winner so it will be those that appeal to me...

According to the guidelines for mini challenges, please give each image a title.

The closing date is just 3 weeks from today - closing 9pm PST June 18th.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you can do here!

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

    Lets Get it Started
    Great theme.

Two emotional and one spiritual connection. The last one is a png image. I thought that would be different and fun to post.

My connections will all be connections in time. Places that I have photographed between 37 and 47 years apart.

    1. Viscaya

    Collages.jpg

Viscaya in Miami - on the left a photo taken in 1967 when they had an antique car show (digitized slide with one of the cars in the foreground) and on the right taken from the same window in 2004

    2. Key West Lighthouse

    Choices.jpg

Key West Lighthouse 1967 and 2005. I did a painting of this lighthouse, and in my painting the lighthouse was yellow and the lantern room was green. So when I saw the lighthouse again some 30+ years later, I was flummoxed by the fact that it was now white with a black lantern. It wasn't until I found a postcard with the old colors that I knew that I hadn't been crazy when I painting the picture in 1967.

    3. Selfie over time

    Selfies.jpg

The last one is selfies taken 47 years apart. In the left one, I am pregnant with my 2nd child. My hair is much shorter, a little grayer, and I have glasses now. Plus I'm a lot fatter even than when I was pregnant. And you can also see the different cameras I used. On the left a Kodak Retina Reflex (for all the photos on the left). On the right the top one taken with a Toshiba (my first digitial camera) and the other two with a Kodak DX6490.

Staying within my favourite subject wildlife.... These three shots are an effort to show -

    1) a connection between things (food chain - to be clinical about it),
    2) a connection to ones self
    3) and perhaps/maybe a connection to the viewer.

    1) Predator and Prey

    2) Introspective

    3) Why?

    Good luck everyone,

Thanks everyone for your entries. This challenge is now closed. You have not made this easy and I'm fascinated by the many interpretations of connection. I'll post the top 3 winners by the end of 6/19. Thanks again for the great shots here.
