I actually prefer the second shot because it's easier to distinguish the rider from the background. While the action is more dramatic in the first one, it took me a bit to sort it all out.

btw the PP was Matt K's free LR preset called Tonal something, I love 1 clickers
Ahh thanks for the info. I've been looking at these and wondering whether it was "gentle" HDR or not. I find all the fluorescent green fringe in #1 a little distracting so I'm going to agree with Richard and prefer #2.
Jeeze, Rags, if I could get that kind of clarity out of a cell phone I'd be delighted. Not likely though, as the EXIF data say it was shot with a D4 and a 200mm lens. From the distance he was probably shooting, I think it would take a huge aperture to get background blur in these, though I too would have liked to see more separation. OTOH, the guys in the background are also part of the story here, so be careful what you wish for.
I think the background in both 1 and 2 is kind of busy and I have a hard time locating the subject.
thanks for your feedback
the BG is what it is and not even f/1.4 is gonna change it nor can you get a different angle but in any event I like the BG and think it adds alot to the images shot here
Maybe
Have you tried burning (etc) on the green post and the lights on it? The post in particular is bright enough to draw the eye. That may be enough to get more separation between the people and the background.

A challenge? definitely not, well not if those are the shots you are putting up against Randy's anyway.
comparing these to Randy's is rather funny actually.
your quality is definitely not there, they are out of focus, lack contrast, in fact they look like iPhone photos (iPhone 4) and your compositions are not there.
look at the front of the bulls head, when you did a selection of the bull to "fake blur" the background, you missed the area in front of the bulls head. really poor post processing skills too.

Subject separation out .... Kill bokeh...
The ipod cam generation is taking over
Cheaper lenses... maybe it's OK
Not my style...
So I bought Alien Skin Bokeh, a group of presets that gives bokeh with labels like 2.8, f4.. etc
Like I said, it's not my style... no judgement intended...
lately I've been shooting the 120-300 here and opening up to f/4 since I like the BG
IMO BG blur is (obviously) for when you don't like the BG

no thanks for your C&C if you are in any way implying that I am a member of the ipod gen:D
most of these were shot at f/2.8
do better and post better or stiffle yourself

IMO the crew (those are not spectators in my shots) make the shots what they are....
so post some of your preset shots, post em right here in this thread, I'm always open to new ideas
