800 x 1200 vs 1200 x 800 when posting photos?

I just created a new thread and when I attached the landscape-oriented photo, got this message:

Upload Errors
DSC_0011 - June 01, 2014.jpg:
The Dimension limits for this filetype are 800 x 1200. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 1200 x 800.

So I re-exported it as 1199 px wide and still got the following message:

Upload Errors
DSC_0011 - June 01, 2014.jpg:
The Dimension limits for this filetype are 800 x 1200. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 1199 x 799.

I ended up having to rotate my photo 90 degrees counterclockwise and post it "sideways" to include on the forum post, even though there is plenty of empty space to the right of it in my post. Why is this necessary?

Please take a look at the FAQ for file sizes. That will give you a bit of an explanation about attaching files.

In the meantime, I'll see what I can do for the alternative dimension.
