Need Artistic Feedback RE Homepage - Slideshow

I am looking for some artistic opinions on how to solve a homepage strategy issue. At present when one goes to my homepage http://jamesfarrell.smugmug.com a slideshow automatically starts. It continues to play (loops/repeats) until the visitor takes some other action, e.g., click on the links at the top of the page or does something else. It works as it's supposed to.
However, I got some feedback from some close friends who suggest that a visitor may think that the slideshow as now presented is too prominent and would cause someone to think that the slideshow is the total content or all that there is to the whole website and thus miss the links to the various galleries at the top of the page (style is Smugmug Gallery style). I tend to agree with this, but I am at a loss as to another strategy. I'm trying to wet the visitor's appetite with the slideshow and motivate them to go to the links in the nav area. But I think the nav area links are lost on my homepage due to the slideshow.
What I'd like to do is to have the slideshow automatically start AND STOP, but I don't think we have that option in Slideshow controls. My thinking is that after a slideshow stops I could call attention to the links at the top of the page (in the nav area.) Any ideas?

Put the site nav on the left for the homepage then at the top of page for rest of site.
Thanks for your response. I am looking for something a little different than what you've done. Nice site, though.
