IE 8 help please!

In an effort to make the white text in my captions more visible, I went to the entire page customize portion of my site (www.smugmug.avman.com or tomdphotos.com) today and entered a background color of black and used the alpha channel setting of 15% so my background image would not be completely hidden. Works great in FF. Even my copy of IE 10 64bit works great. Haven't tried any other browsers on my computer. My wife's computer is using Win XP therefore only has IE 8 (her preferred). When I went to look at my site on her computer, the background hides the background image. My question(s), is code available to display the background image with the black background at 15%? I also saw a "thumbs up" image under my photos in IE 10 on my computer, I think where the old comment button used to be. Did not see that on FF. Can anyone explain that to me? Thank you in advance for the help...

It didn't work....Thank you
On the flip side - I think I may try no background photo for a while...just to see.....
I was gonna ask .... when Win2K was no longer supported, where was all the security fuss?

I'm going to assume you didn't just copy and paste the code I posted. That will not work because '.YourBackgroundClassHere' is NOT a class.

I have thought that keeping my SM site functional in IE8 was necessary because it appears 10% of the world still uses IE8...

When I look at the browsers used by the viewers of my site, I was surprised to see IE in the 2nd spot - but almost all of those views were using IE11.

I just looked at my SM site in GA. For the past year: #1 FF, #2 Chrome, #3 Safari, #4 IE. Those using IE: IE10 (75), IE11 (72), IE9 (40), and IE8 (29).
The WordPress theme I'm using only supports the last two versions of IE. I do the same with SM.
