It seems that gallery style 'collage landscape only shows filenames with hover' while 'collage portrait' has the filenames below the images.

Is there a way to have gallery style 'collage portrait' but have the filenames only show with hover?

You can find the available customizations for the different gallery styles by going to a gallery and choosing the customize > customize site option. In the customize site screen that comes up, hold your mouse over the gallery content and click on the wrench button. In the dialog that comes up, you can click on any gallery style to adjust style specific settings. For example, if you wish to adjust the info style display below the photo tiles in collage portrait, you can try out different "info style" and "info hover" settings. The latter controls whether the info text is displayed at all times or only on hover.

Collage Portrait style has no setting "info hover".

You're right. I must have accidentally looked at the collage landscape one. Sorry about that. That means, you can either display the info section at all times or hide it completely.
