Watermark placement

I thought I wanted to watermark my photos, but, cheapskate that I am, I did not want to plunk down $90 to upgrade to SmugPro just to get the Watermark feature (I had the $60 package, and I am not interested in having a storefront right now).

So, I spent hours creating a spiffy logo/watermark in Photoshop, added it to several of my pictures in LR and then uploaded the watermarked photos to Smug Mug. This worked quite well. I was able to choose the position, size, transparency, etc of the logo specifically for each photo. But, it was a bit of a hassle. I can't imagine doing that for very many pictures.

So, I bought SmugPro and tried watermarking directly in SmugMug. I uploaded my spiffy logo/watermark in .png format to SmugMug and applied it to several pictures, but I didn't like how it looked. SmugMug limits the positioning of the watermarks - there are a lot of position options, for sure. But, say one chooses "bottom right": There is no control over how far to the right or how close to the bottom you place your watermark. I like my watermarks positioned unobtrusively.

Am I missing something here? Is there a way to tell SmugMug to mark your photos 1/8" from the right border and 1/8" from the bottom, for example?

Thanks.

Any chance of cropping off any blank space on the right and bottom of the png?

    Hi Deborah,
Nope, you are correct, we really don't offer fine control on watermark placement. You say you like them the be unobtrusive. Please bear in mind that in this day and age, where everyone seems to want to "borrow" photos to post on their social sites, for free. It's only makes sense to take advantage of as much protection as possible. So we recommend watermarks that can't be easily cropped or removed.

If we don't offer a location that works for you, all we can do is echo Allen's reply. Adding or removing space, on the ends, will move the watermark horizontally.

    Have a wonderful evening Deborah

Thanks Allan. I had never thought about putting some space into the watermark, to reposition it. After all this time, you would think that I would have thought of that as it is so obvious - geesh!!

Now I have been able to move the watermarks off the floor and sides. Thanks so much.

Allen, Steve, Clive, and pullmax: Thank you, all of you, for your comments. In light of Steve's comments, I'll rethink my watermarking goals. I also had not thought about minimizing the white space on the edges of the .png. Thank, you, Allen, for that suggestion. Pullmax, I'll have a look at Mass Watermark via the youtube link that you shared.

Do you (or anyone else) ever print your photos from your smug site? If you do - watermarking in SmugMug leaves the original clean (so prints will not have a watermark on them), watermarking before you upload to smug means that the prints will have a watermark on them.

Good to know, Denise. I had been wondering about that; I thought it might be the case but had not gotten around to giving it a try. Absolutely another thing to consider.
