Unsupported old RAW formats, urban legend?

I remember some years ago being told that one reason to convert your RAW files to DNG was because sometimes a RAW format for an older camera gets dropped from software. Is this true or urban legend? Are there any examples of old RAW formats that current versions of ACR, Lightroom, Aperture, Capture One /etc. no longer support? Thanks.

I think it was just a fear, never reality.

Wondering if this page means the Canon Powershots G1-G4 are no longer supported as RAW files for Apple's Aperture?

hmmm. Were they ever supported? If so, my bet would be that they are still supported.

In actuality, the raw decoder is a Mac OS feature rather than something Aperture brings to the process (despite what Apple's webpage implies).

Do you have a Canon Powershot, or are you considering one? I have Aperture, so could test readability of a raw file for you (if you can find one).

Early G-series and their first gen dSLR's output .CRW's did they not? Canon's DPP should be able to read them. Your best bet moving forward might be to make 16-bit TIFF's from the files if you're worried about future compatibility.
