Unsupported old RAW formats, urban legend?

I remember some years ago being told that one reason to convert your RAW files to DNG was because sometimes a RAW format for an older camera gets dropped from software. Is this true or urban legend? Are there any examples of old RAW formats that current versions of ACR, Lightroom, Aperture, Capture One /etc. no longer support? Thanks.

I think it was just a fear, never reality.

hmmm. Were they ever supported? If so, my bet would be that they are still supported.
In actuality, the raw decoder is a Mac OS feature rather than something Aperture brings to the process (despite what Apple's webpage implies).
Do you have a Canon Powershot, or are you considering one? I have Aperture, so could test readability of a raw file for you (if you can find one).
