Last Saturday I agreed to do a family shoot though I really never feel like I know what I'm doing. It was bright sun, so I looked for shade, and I used the on-camera flash for fill-in. Any pointers for future attempts? General feedback?

You captured some nice emotion here! I'm sure the family will love them. As for pointers with light, try scheduling your shoots during the early morning or close to sunset in the evening. This way, you'll have more shade to work with and you can be more versatile with your light.
