Joel- thanks for taking the time to comment. In the 2nd you are looking SE so star trails do not work in this shot. There are other formations that could work for star trails. At this point though with temps in the single digits we were not willing to venture too far from the fire for too long. These formations are actually lit with both moonlight and the fire we had going.

I think #1 would be excellent too except the clouds do not offer enough contrast. I think a clear dark sky and it would look great, IMO.
