Phil/Steve: Thanks! My wife had also commented on # 2 when she was looking over the shots. I was more pleased with # 1 even though no eyes were visible since usually it just a bunch of bodies in front of the goalie I can never get decent shots of a save.
Capturing the eyes is really tough in HS field hockey; the combination of the goggles plus looking down so often obscures the eyes. Here are a couple more with eyes somewhat visible:
Hi Will,
What's the league? I agree that #2's really nice. Oh, you were pretty cruel to the spectator in #7.
John
HA! Didn't even see that until you pointed out...and you're right! It's one of the tough things about these playdays--fields are right on top of each other and so the spectators are within a couple feet of the sideline. That image was with a 300 f2.8, but virtually all the way across the field so the DOF isn't as tight.
This was some IAAM (Maryland's/Baltimore's private school league), Howard CO, Baltimore CO, and maybe Anne Arundel CO public school teams getting together for several short pre-season games on a Saturday.
Jack & Steve: Thanks! Appreciate the feedback.
The girl pictured in #2 is a senior and team captain and a really good player. She really knows how to play and makes it a lot easier to capture a good shot.
I'm going to be out running around a bit myself this weekend so no shots -- but hoping to get to a college womens' LAX fall ball tournament at American Univ in DC the following weekend. Really looking forward to that.

Natural selection is responsible for every living thing that exists.
D3s, D500, D5300, and way more glass than the wife knows about.
An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
