Not crazy busy, but enough to provide some variety :)

DId a "pickup" session with this guy - did some back in April, but his hair was long, and he looks SO MUCH BETTER (and younger) with short hair that I told him to come in and I'd snap a few more for him (he'll pay me for edits, of course). Still working on hi-key in my small space - I get closer every time....

3. Such a character! This was his "Zoolander" impersonation lol

i-nHjCs3k-XL.jpg

Also did some for a 50-something actress.

4.

5. My personal favorite from the session - not really a typical headshot, but dang I love the way it came out!

i-p6zsP84-X2.jpg

6. And a former voice student of mine who has her first "real" gig and needed some shots. We had a lot of fun!

Yes, the focus hit her eyelashes. And I love this shot so much I kind of don't care.... :rofl I might paste in sharper irises if it really bothers anybody, but I kind of like it as is; there's a mystery to it I like. Btw, those eyes have had very little colour enhancement - they really are.... GREEN in the light we were using.

8 And who says headshots are only for people? :D (Our club had a grooming day and asked if I do some pictures.... :)

GEEZ Diva what's with all those blurred backgrounds?rolleyes1.gifrofl

I like the people but you killed me with the Bearded Collie. My favorite dog (of 14) in 60 years, they are just people in dog suits.

Hehehehe - they are indeed people in fur coats. This was a fun bunch, and it was part of a grooming demo done by a pro groomer who just happens to be Beardie person.

Here's the whole gang. You can see they turn heads even when they're on the wrong side of the glass rolleyes1.gif

Sir John died in 1995 and I miss him to this day. Definitely gonna show this to the wife so I can watch her cry. I'm cruel like that.

I like seven a lot. 2 and three are nice too.

The others, being the traditionalist I am, are too hot in spots for my taste. Then again, I'm told most of my taste is in my mouth. I still wear vests for god sakes. (waist coats for you Brits, not underwear).:D

Great series, and I do love the dogs……
Four Left is appealing to me….. but that is a taste…..
The guy nr 3 is great.
I notice that in some pictures a lot of the facial details and curves/depth is lost, I assume that this is by purpose. Of course the shallow DOF has some effect amplified with the extra brightness and reduced contrast.
Is there a reason why you do this, it starts to look like a HK , but then again it's not.. I can imagine that it hides the imperfections of the skin and age effects….

Besides that , and again that is a personal taste a great set.

    Thanks, guys!

I'm worried by these comments about "hot" and "bright". Not on my (calibrated) monitor, or by the histogram. But I trust you guys implicitly, so obviously I'm missing something. Enlighten me (no pun intended)!!

DS, the only one which was very intentionally low-contrast and bright is 5 - I do favour a bright fairly flat lighting scheme for headshots, but I don't want to lose all modelling shadows. Have I unwittingly done so? PLEASE let me know, as I'll re-edit to ensure that's not the case.... Btw Other than the guy (2x lights on background, one at the front in a 45" photek), these were all done with 100% natural light outside on my covered porch; the dogs were lit with those huge storefront windows you can see in the group shots. The shots with the guy had some issues with a light leak - was furious, as other than that the lighting (I thought) worked well and the shots would have been "wash and wear" if I hadn't had to painstakingly edit the leaks out :-/ I'll post some of the problem shots for perusal when I get home later.............

I like things on the hot and bright side sometimes so I am not noticing the anything that looks particularly bright or hot. At least not on the subjects. I think 4 and 5 may come across as bright, but to me the light backgrounds draws my attention to her eyes more because of the contrast. I don't think the pics are blownout, just have more bright areas than usual.

I looked at these on the monitor at the college, and my phone, and they still looked ok, so I'm wondering what you guys are seeing. Is it just the flat bright style that doesn't appeal? I'm getting really paranoid about editing these days and just not trusting myself or my eyes ne_nau.gif

As for the high key set up: two FLAGGED lights behind walls/flats pointed at the background, 1+reflector on him. I still haven't figured out what caused the leak on camera left - was so frustrating, as other than that they didn't need much in post. I tried EVERY light source off/on, I moved him forward, I moved all the reflectors, I closed the bilnds fully, and it was still there no matter what I did. Grrr. Fixable in post, but a major pain.

    i-5MkrKHv-XL.jpg

And attached is the lighting setup I typically use for this . Room is about 14ftx9ft, but there's furniture to navigate which is why I can't really move subject further forward (or step further back).

    Aw, thanks Trudy!!

DS & Bryce, hoping you saw my queries above - trying to make sense of whether this is simply a taste difference (I like images hotter and flatter than you do), or whether there are technicals that need addressing. These are tending to get printed, so I want to be sure I have it "right" thumb.gif

I don't see it as a technical problem that needs fixing. It is a matter of taste.
