Grasshopper in my yard

One of the first I've taken with my Nikkor 40mm f/2.8.

Any tips, I've been looking at quite a few of the shots on here such as that Acorn weevil I would love to achieve that much detail... Was that with a more closed aperture and flash?

Looks darker after the Flickr upload for whatever reason...

Good capture- slightly missed clean focus on the grasshopper's head/eyes. Guessing you had a fairly wide aperture and hence narrow DOF.
Yes the acorn weevil shots were with diffused flash with the camera in manual mode.

Awesome thanks Brian...your shots are amazing man i spent like an hour going through them. The depth of field definitely suffered in this pic, something I'll be avoiding in the future.

Closed up my aperture and got some better shots of another one.

Thanks for the tips man, I'll need to invest in a flash next
