My friend has been telling me to pick up Extension tubes for my nikkor 40mm f/2.8 micro..
Whenever I research them I see they're supposed to give a macro-esque effect to no macro lenses..any point using them with my 40?

If you want to photograph subjects from closer than the near point focus of your 40mm macro, then extension tubes will let you do that. If you can get as close as you need with your 40mm macro, then extension tubes won't be needed for your 40mm macro.

I rarely use extension tubes with my macro lenses, but I do use them with my moderate telephotos so I can focus closer and capture butterflies, and critters more closely. In other words, extension tubes have more uses than just with your 40mm macro lens. Extension tubes can be used on a 70-200 or a 100-400 lens for instance.

    Your call.
