Pushing my camera to its Photographic Limits

Hello All,
Attended a Christmas Show with my S9000 and my monopod.
We were seated in the rear of the auditorium.
All of my images were shot from my seat.
Image 27 ( page 3) shows our view of the show.
Images 2 & 13 were shot by my Self-timer as I held my camera above my head by holding my monopod upward.
One moment I shot at 200 mm and then the next at 600 mm digital Zoom. I went back and forth. I tried manual focus as well. With the max 4.8 aperture at the tele end, the shutter speeds were a bit slow to capture some of the acton. my shots were coming out blurry.
I adapted to the situation by followng the action and taking the shot at the end of a performer's movement. This worked well and I decided to shoot raw depending on the importance and the timing of the performance. I found that at 800 ISO, shooting RAW, does indeed provide alot of detail that you can obtain by using Neat Image to reduce the noise.
Jpeg in camera processing does eat detail at hgh ISO.
It was a fun Show and it was enjoyable to push the limits of my S9000 and still obtain some captured moments.
I presented the church with an album of all 29 images printed at 8x10:

very compressed. This is one of the problems shooting with zooms.
I like the shots showing the stage from up high. Helps to give some perspective
to the scenes.
Very nice gesture to give the church copies.
Just a thought - since we're talking about the performance of the camera here, it would be useful to have the exif available (turn "camera details" on in customize gallery setup) and maybe allow size Large, so folks get a better view
Happy New Year to you and yours!

Nice shots under tougher than average conditions. Love the "cowboy" kid pictures - cute expressions.
BTW, there is a nice review of the s9000 in this month's Shutterbug mag.
I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

Hello All,
Not to get off topic but a reply to Andy:
Andy, I do no post large or original size because when I do I lose copyright protection. Can this be fixed by Smugmug?
Regards, Nicholas
Nick, you have a pro account. You can right click protect the photos (which, you've done I see). How does allowing size Large (never Original) make you lose your copyright? The photos are yours. Small, Medium, Large - they're all yours
The main point of my post though, was that if your talking tech details about a camera, it's good to include the EXIF - and that's just a radio button in Gallery Tools>Customize Gallery>Camera Info = Yes
I hope this helps.
All the best,

I think he's worried that people could take "large" version files, and make 4x6'es out of them. (or larger?)
I'm not sure what size Smugmug makes "large" jpeg's in the display mode, but i've seen people get decent prints out of 1024x768, which most photographers charge at least a dollar or two for.

Nevermind then!
I guess I oughta try it out sometime eh?
My only worry is that it's an american site, and the costs/shipping probably doesn't justify using it for my mostly canadian audience.
On that note, is there anywhere with the details about how much SM charges for each size of print, etc..? or should I just try to set up an account?
Also, is there a dGrin discount? :-P

Andy, perhaps you are unaware of this:
The Larger images open in a new window Which Does Not carry the Right Click Copyright Protection.
To provide you with an actual gallery which loses the copyright protection I have enabled display of the Largest size image, blocked the display of the Original image, and selected copyright protection for this gallery:
http://nickphoto123.smugmug.com/gallery/1040225/1/48281367
right click on the thumbnails or the selected thumbnail's larger version and you will see the copyright protection.
double click on the displayed larger version and you are brought to a new window of a larger version and if you right click on this image in the new window you will see that there is NO right click protection.
Smugmug should correct this issue.
I will set the gallery to my previous setting tomorrow, to give you a chance to read this post and check it out.
Regards, Nicholas
Nick, I did this and got a meaningless spacer.gif. Don't understand what the problem is, working as advertised, far as I can tell.

Nick,
Ouch, I'm sorry you're not fully understanding how Right-Click protect works, Nick. Please look at the file you can save. It's called "spacer.gif"..go ahead, try it
It works. Nothing needs to be corrected. I hope this clarifies it!

Only at the tele end. It's f/2.8 at the wider end.

Andy, Perhaps this info should be included in the Smugmug instruction page.
Thank you.
Mitchell,
It seems to be typical for Zoom Digicams.
The Sony R-1 which only goes to 120mm, equiv., also goes to 4.8 on the tele end, which is a pretty bad spec for 120mm, IMHO.
Regards, Nicholas
Whew. So glad that you understand it now! All the best,

that's my favorite type of zoom.
Thanks for the info. My experience with this type of camera is limited.
