I have a similar shoot coming up (mma fighter).
what was your lighting setup?

Here's one similar in color. Since this was processed in color, I opted for the b&w on the other

Key light was a beauty dish on a AB 800 set to 1/8th close in about 2 foot from subject left (bottom of dish top of head height). Strip box cross lighting set @ a bit over 1/4 (lower camera right). Kicker w/AB 400 filler for rim lighting. ISO 100 @ 7.1 1/200th....used the 24/105 (Canon of course). Thanks

I am thinking of picking up two for a cross light set up.. but my wallet is cowering in fear.

Yes....get them! Get the grids as well...this way you can feather the light, use the edge of the light...containing the light is paramount for a desired look. I'm picking up another (lost it somewhere...) grid for the beauty dish. I use the beauty dish probably more than any other light modifier...outside w/battery pack for weddings and seniors....wind resistant and excellent filler for off axis lighting

An "accurate" reproduction of a scene and a good photograph are often two different things.
Thanks Jack...I did in fact use a spray bottle and have a few...I really soaked him down for a bag punch, including the bag but we did not get the effect we were hoping for. Thinking I may need a bucket...

In some cases, bigger is better, depending on what you are shooting. When I'm doing pin up styles and want real soft light, I love a big softbox, in close. That being said, I've always wanted one of those humungous octaboxes.... The extra large (which I don't have) would be great for elegant portraiture. For edgy stuff, smaller, harder light is required....not that you couldn't use a large softbox...you would simply have to feather with the edges and tone it down.

Same with the BD. Just need to get the grids.
I'm thinking of using stipboxes for the endgier, harsh light, but wonder if I can do the hash full body shots with the smaller ones.. hmm..
