Well, I am embarrassed to say, didn't know what the hell it was.....I guess it is bigger deal in Southern California....
However, the kind of shots you guys scored, it is even worth the travel!!
This is a Mexican Holiday, Aztec actually, for remembering those loved now departed. The Aztecs had a fixation with death, much of which is reflected in the modern holiday. Traditionally, it starts with a village procession, the graves are fixed up and decorated, an altar in the home displaying flowers, photos and objects the departed cherished, then a family meal is shared between the living and the dead. The first day of activities is to honor the departed children, The "Day of the Little Angels". Hollywood has taken this holiday an extra step ... but then again ... that's Hollywood.
It is very big in Mexico, as one would suspect.

There are lines down the block to get into Hollywood Forever. I like the concept of honoring your 'extended' family by all of you sitting down to a meal.

De Nada. Next year if you can't find an event up north. Come on down to LA, I'll show you the ropes.

I have been really surprised by how this holiday has blossomed into something huge.
Great variety of moods, characters, and performances.
It seems like it would be a perfect setting for the event...
I like #1 and all the B&W's especially.

Halloween has become an adult holiday much means adult spending power ... et cetera. Day of the Dead becomes another marketing magnet because of its association to Halloween.

Thank you Eric. Next year I need to check out the San Diego celebration. The Hollywood Forever venue is more adult oriented.

Thank you Richard.

Thank you Phil. The event is just one big photo op ... hard to go wrong in any direction.
Marigolds, pictured above, are another Aztec symbol. For the Aztec, the yellow/orange flowers are a symbol of death and are called the "flower of the dead". In Spanish they are known as cempazuchitl, cempasuchil or zempasuchitl.
Marigolds sprinkled on Day of the Dead altars, graves and are painted on skulls. Marigolds are use as a trail marker from grave to home to help lead the deceased to the celebratory meal.
