Force gallery main image to be no bigger than "large"

I have a watermark that I would like included on all images from XLarge upwards. I've managed to set this up so it works as I want.

I am using the SmugMug gallery style. I've set the maximum display size to be X3Large and have applied the watermark. Lightbox images are now watermarked as I want.

The problem I have is that in the gallery display, the main, or active, image on the right side of the page sometimes has a watermark and sometimes doesn't. The aspect ratio of the image seems to be causing the website to use either the -L image (no watermark) or the -XL image (with watermark), even though the actual displayed size of both versions is very similar.

Is there any way of ensuring that the gallery main image on the right side of the page is never taken from a version bigger than -L?

I could set the watermark to be present on Large sizes and above, but I don't really want the watermark visible on gallery images, until they are lightboxed.

I could set the maximum size of the gallery to be Large, but then that limits the lightbox display too.

Thanks

Yes, in your gallery settings you can choose the maximum display size of the images in your gallery :)

But that will affect lightbox display size as well. He needs some fancy CSS to do what he wants... If it's possible. Another option that might do it is turning the stretchy feature off and setting a max width that prevents the main image from getting too big. Not sure if that would work, and it would be a really ugly solution.

Ahh, my apologies for not reading close enough! Unfortunately this isn't possible due to the way we source the image. We know that the window can handle a larger photo, so we pull the largest photo that will fit the window, which in this case is X2. Even if we try to use CSS to limit the size of the Gallery image, we still have already pulled the X2 image. For high density displays, this becomes even more of a factor, since we pull higher resolution images for those monitors, which often results in a larger image even on mobile devices (since they can handle the extra pixels with a retina screen). As the window size shrinks (or if CSS is used to shrink the gallery image size) we don't re-download a new / smaller image. The larger X2 image is still loaded, just shrunk to fit the smaller size.

The only way to prevent watermarking on the gallery images would be to also prevent the larger display sizes in the lightbox :(
