trouble with watermarking

I recently upgraded to SM Pro and I'm having trouble with the watermarking option. I had it working, but then I made some changes to my gallery organization, and I can't get it to work again.

I create the watermark in the account settings-> branding, and then when I click on the security and privacy option in the settings of the organizer, and switch watermarking to on, then choose a watermark, and check the box that says "watermark all photos in this gallery" and hit save. But that doesn't make the watermark appear. When I go back in the security and privacy option, that box is no longer checked.
I've tried remaking the watermark, changing the settings on it, going back in the organization tools, etc, but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Maria

Actually, I logged out and now I can see the watermark, but it's only on some of the photos, not all of them, even though I checked that box.

Hmm. OK, I think I fixed it, but can't see how to delete this thread, so I'll leave it up in case someone has this issue in the future. The watermarks only show up after logging out, and if there are photos in a gallery that are also in another gallery, the watermark won't show up until you've selected the watermark option for both of the galleries with the photo.

Watermarks should show up both when you are logged in and not logged in. They will not show on the Original-sized images. There may be a lag between when you request that the watermark be applied and when the watermark is shown (if you apply the watermark after you have loaded the photos into the gallery).

If an image is collected from a different gallery the watermark is applied to the photo in the source gallery; requesting that the gallery containing the collected image be watermarked will not watermark the collected image.

I'm still having issues with the watermark function. So if I have a gallery that has all watermarked images from the settings function, and I move images from that gallery to other galleries, will the watermarks move, too, or do I need to go in to each new gallery and add the watermark function? I've tried both options for the last two hours and neither one seems to watermark anything.
I want to just move files from one master gallery to lots of other galleries because that's easier to do from the organizer panel than to upload a couple pictures to each of many new galleries, but the watermarks are maddening. I'm also frustrated by the fact that this new master gallery, which I selected "watermark all images", has watermarks on only half of the images in the gallery, and I can't figure out why.
    Thanks.

Watermarks are not applied when you add a watermark to an existing gallery. If you have an existing gallery without a watermark defined and you add a watermark via the settings for that gallery, you must also apply the watermark to the photos in the gallery.

If the gallery is set to be watermarked, all newly uploaded photos will be watermarked.

If there are existing photos in the gallery that are not yet watermarked, go into the organizer, select the photos in the gallery, click the wrench icon, Watermark, and apply the watermark. The watermark tool is also available on individual photos.

See the "Apply Watermarks" section of the help page at http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93343-how-do-i-watermark-photos-.

I don't understand what you mean by this: Watermarks are not applied when you add a watermark to an existing gallery. If you have an existing gallery without a watermark defined and you add a watermark via the settings for that gallery, you must also apply the watermark to the photos in the gallery.?

If you have an existing gallery containing photos and you want to define (or change) the watermark for that gallery:
Go into gallery settings and specify the watermark to be used.

If you upload new photos to that gallery the watermark will be applied.

If there are existing photos in the gallery, setting the watermark in the gallery settings will not automatically apply it to the existing photos. You must edit the photos to apply the watermark. This can be done on the individual photo or it can be done in organizer.

    In organizer:
    • Open the gallery
    • Select all of the photos you want to watermark
    • Click the wrench icon
    • Click Watermark
    • Select the watermark you want to use
    • Apply

From the help page that I referenced above:
Want watermarks applied while you're uploading photos? Go to your gallery settings, choose On for Apply Watermark, and choose which watermark you'd like applied. From now on, photos you upload to this gallery will automatically get watermarked.

To apply watermarks to a photo already in a gallery, click the wrench button to access the editor tools. Click Open in Editor and then Watermark.

Ah. ok. But what about if I have watermarked photos in a gallery and I want to move them (not collect) to other galleries -- will the watermarks follow, or no? I did the same steps and some of the new galleries have watermarks and some don't. I also re-uploaded all the photos again to the original gallery, with the watermark setting already there, and some of them have watermarks and some don't, so I'm confused. Thanks!

As far as I know the watermark stays with the photo until you re-watermark it.

How big are the photos that don't have watermarks?

I think there are two possibilities here:
    1. Watermarks are only applied if the longest side of the original is more than 800 pixels. If the original is too small the photo won't be watermarked.
    2. When you defined the watermark, what did you specify as the smallest size to be watermarked? I had experimented with specifying something other than small as the smallest size thinking that when in collage landscape the collage entries wouldn't be watermarked but the lightbox image would. The problem I ran into was that depending on the size shown in collage landscape display some photos would show a watermark and some wouldn't (because I have my site set to vary the photo height). After I saw that I changed back to watermarking starting on the small display size.

The files are big - 8x10. I have the watermark set to smallest display size "small" and I set up the galleries so the maximum display size is medium. But that's what I do for all the photos, so it shouldn't be the case that some of them get watermarked and some don't (in the same gallery, with the same settings).
I don't know if the watermarks move with the files - it's faster at this point to just use the wrench in the organizer, so thanks for that tip.
